About Us

The 3 STAR quality grading awarded by VisitScotland (formerly the Scottish Tourist Board) to this annually inspected property allows us officially to describe it as "Very Good" accommodation
(Inspected and graded on 26/9/19 the Wing scored 70%, well within the 60 - 74% Quality Assurance Range for 3 STAR Scottish Tourist Board self-catering accommodation.)

Useful information for our less mobile guests>>>>

-Car parking about 50 paces from the entry door.
-2 storey accommodation: flight of 17 stairs.
-Sole bathroom and all bedrooms are upstairs.
-Power shower over bath: no walk-in shower cabinet
-Any of that a problem? Check out our 3 disability-friendly cottages
-Attractively screened by dense rhododendron bushes and trees, Crosswoodhill farmhouse is situated well back and across the road -
from the farm buildings. Guests can relax in their garden and absorb the peaceful atmosphere after a day's touring or strenuous
activity.

Layout>>>>

Guests enter from their own garden at the rear of the farmhouse into their own two-storey home in the middle of the farmhouse. Downstairs is a well-equipped kitchen. Although a galley-style kitchen it really does have all the appliances and gadgets you need and works well for guests. Adjacent is a cosy living room for 4 / dining room for 6: the multi-fuel stove here burns coal and logs. Full oil-fired central heating throughout the house. There are decent-sized TVs, DVD players both upstairs and downstairs, ideal for guests with different viewing tastes. Guests also find having two living areas a real bonus. Ever encountered teenagers keen to get away from their parents and have their own space? Or vice-versa? The Wing is ideal for this.

A short flight of stairs leads up to the more traditional part of the house with old pine window panelling, working shutters and doors. A house of great character, guests remark on its lovely atmosphere. Leading off the passageway with views out over the lawn and trees are 3 bedrooms. A bedroom with great character with a double bed.. At the far end of the upstairs corridor is a spacious second living room with a sofa bed and double bed, heaped with floral cushions for daytime relaxation. Facing windows invite both morning and evening sunshine. At the top of the stairs the third bedroom has very comfortable adult-size bunk beds. In this bedroom a solid oak original door, always kept locked when guests are in residence, separates the Wing from the landing and stairs belonging to the front of the house where we live as owners. All 3 bedrooms have enough floor space for a child's cot. The bathroom has a power shower over the bath.

On request, we can supply a stairgate for toddlers for the foot of the stairs only.

What's Special>>>>

The whole ambience of the Wing. It dates from the eighteenth century and has immense character with its original pine doors, windows, shutters and pine panelling. Furnishing the Wing in a contemporary style like Orlege just would not seem right. Yes, the furniture is older, but it is of good quality, much of it has been in the Hamilton family for a long time with some superb pieces like the Gentleman's wardrobe in the double bedroom, and each piece has been chosen carefully to fit the style of the Wing. You can glimpse some of this from the sequence of 30 photos within the Wing Gallery Page where we "walk you through the property", with a commentary on every room.

A decent-sized garden to relax in and with enough length for children to play ball games.

New in 2015, in the woods behind the Wing garden, is a splendid large play area (with alternative access through the woods offered to the guests from the other 2 smaller cottages). Proving hugely popular are the garden play fort, swings including a large family basket swing, sling and toddler swings, a trapeze bar and rings, a see-saw, sandpit and balancing logs. Whoops of delight confirm it was worth the investment! We do request adult supervision, please.

Always keen to upgrade or add something new every year, in 2016 we completed an attractive, wide, cobble-effect path for the 30 metres or so to the Wing from the tarmac area where guests park their cars. Now 2 people can walk side by side with their wheeled luggage, unlike in the past. Guests still have 2 small gates to open and shut as they pass through our long-term tenants' garden, where Eve and Bill kennel their friendly, but never roaming, deerhound dog in a large fenced-off area.

Other Information>>>>>

>Electricity as used (meter readings charged at cost, according to usage).WHY? Some owners prefer to offer an "all-in" rental but into that rental, they have built-in costs for those guests who use a lot of fuel and electricity. We prefer that guests who are economic or "green" in their usage should benefit, pay less and not subsidise more profligate users! This applies to the Wing, Steading Cottage and Orlege End, but not Craigengar Lodge where heating and electricity are included in the rental.
>Heating Oil charged at cost according to usage.
>Solid Fuel Supplies may be purchased at cost.

Pets by arrangement: £20 per dog per week/part week

For those holidaying with their dog(s), we would be immensely grateful if you could observe the: The Wing Cottage.

If you bring your pets on holiday with you, we assume it is because they are part of the family and you accept that it may restrict how and where you spend your time. Some pets, totally happy to be left on their own back at their real home, have surprised their owners by becoming really quite distressed about being left in a strange house. The dogs then, in turn, distress those within earshot at Crosswoodhill.

Inside>>>

1. Our Terms of Let state that dogs are not to be left alone at any time in the accommodation. Occasionally, and always following discussion, we may relax this rule allowing guests to leave them unattended “at home” for half a day ( a maximum of 4 hours ideally ) provided they are shut in the porch at the Steading, the downstairs bathroom in Orlege or the ground floor in the Wing, with their needs remembered ( comfort, food, drink, temperature.) Unless your dog has been left within an individual “crate” that they are used to and we have inspected, a £100 cash deposit, payable before the event, will be required if any pets are to be left alone, by agreement, at any time. This £100 will be returned at the end of the stay if no damage has been caused to the property. However, if it is evident that your dog has become distressed about being left at home, barks a lot or our property appears to be “at-risk”, please accept that this privilege will be withdrawn and the dog owner/guest will be responsible for paying in full for any damage sustained to the property. If you have a mobile phone, leaving us the number for emergency situations would be helpful ( and please keep it switched on ). And please tell us the name of your pet(s).
2. Please keep your pets off the furniture and remove any animal hairs from the rugs, floorboards, etc. before you leave. (The cylindrical vacuum cleaner, with attachments for upholstery, is useful for this.)
3. Please do not allow any dogs upstairs, on the beds or chairs. Please bring your own dog-beds/baskets.
4. Please keep your dog under strict control at all times and accept any liability for any damage caused. Please be aware that if you leave your dog unattended in the house and it chews and swallows a foreign body, this could be fatal. For this reason, if you have trained your dogs to accept a crate as a safe den, it would be ideal to bring a crate with you.

Outside>>>

1. Because of the sheep, please no exercising in the fields, on or off the lead, unless we have signposted you, after arrival, to any empty-of-stock adjacent fields ( but please don’t rely on this) There is a very good picnic area one mile down the road on the A70 on the left-hand side, just beyond the junction with the B7008 to West Calder. This offers dogs plenty of scope to scamper some distance off a lead.
2. Could you please use a poop scoop (supplied) in the garden and make sure that all offerings are picked up and disposed of into the black wheely bin. It is exceedingly unpleasant for guests following you to inherit a garden or woodland area contaminated with dog faeces.
3. Please oversee your dog’s voiding sessions and encourage your dog to urinate outside the garden in the woods at the back of the Wing, or in the wooded area to the front of Orlege or outside the gates of Steading Cottage. This is because, unfortunately, the ammonia in the urine burns the lawn, leaving unsightly patches which take weeks to disappear.
4. Please be aware of the following: Steading Cottage garden is enclosed, but athletic dogs could jump the surrounding stone walls and escape onto the road if not supervised. With Orlege, the patio area is not enclosed and an unsupervised dog could wander down the lane onto the road. The Wing of Crosswoodhill guests should be aware of woods at the back of their garden, where an adventurous unsupervised dog could eventually find its way onto the road or fall in a stream. Also be aware that our tenants of 430+ years in the middle section of Crosswoodhill farmhouse (which houses the Wing and Orlege) kennel their 2 dogs outside to the rear of the lovely garden that Wing guests pass through. But their dogs never roam unsupervised in the gardens. And up at Craigengar an athletic dog could jump the fences into the fields and worry our livestock.
5. We do provide old dog towels and some dog bowls for you use. Please bring your own leads.
Many thanks for your help with all of this. Keep to the “rules” and dogs will love it here!
