Stylish, sumptuous, contemporary, open-plan, exciting, elegant, stunning, a holiday romance.......

All these words have been used by guests to describe this open-flow, contemporary conversion completed in December 2004 and named after the fields it overlooks. Designed for flexibility, Orlege is the perfect honeymoon hideaway, but appeals just as much to families or business people in search of luxury or utopia.

This accommodation really is Wow! Its two-storeyed layout is excitingly different, with the most wonderful star and angled shapes of coombed ceilings in the bedroom and bathroom upstairs accessed via a mezzanine-level gallery, whilst downstairs curved walls, and a double-height living space marry well with the original beams in the kitchen. Unusual features have been preserved from its former function as a building for rolling oats for feeding to livestock. With its Scandinavian glazed sliding doors, Velux roof-windows, solid oak floors and doors, wonderful limestone flagstones, open stairwell and ash staircase with tension wire balustrades, solid oak kitchen units and black granite worktop, it's bright, white, light and airy. Matching the granite hearth in the living-room are Juperana Bordeaux granite large windowsills reflecting within their polished depths the branches of the maple tree outside.

Upstairs>>
There is a large, split level bedroom with a star-shaped coombed ceiling which has 3 single luxurious divan beds. Wake up in the morning, pull back the velux blinds to right and left of you and feel close to heaven! Two of these single beds can push together and be zip-linked to form a large kingsize double bed. This gives the flexibility of using this bedroom as either a family room, or for 3 singles, or as a double bedroom. Off the upstairs bedroom is an en-suite bathroom full of light, shapes and surprises!

Also upstairs, before you enter through the door into the bedroom, is an inviting gallery area. A great spot to relax with a book, or to gaze across and out of the upper storey window or view from aloft the larger part of the stylish living area below. As well as a lounger and other incidental furniture, the space here allows for a sofa bed which can sleep an "extra person", or even two slim cuddly people: the mattress width is 124cms. A normal single is 90cms. and a conventional double is 135 cms). Please note anyone sleeping here would need to go through another "sleeping area" to reach a bathroom.

Downstairs>>
The spacious living area has split level ceiling heights for interest; at the back is a large solid oak cupboard which, within it, hides a surprisingly discreet double bed with an extremely comfortable fully sprung mattress. One pull of the handle and this bed can come down at night and disappear out of sight again during the day with bedding largely intact and only a row of elegant daytime cupboards on show. Concealed within the cupboard doors, on either side of the pull-down bed, is hanging and shelf-space. With one swish an optional double-sided curtain can snake its way at night across the ceiling track here at the back of the living area to provide privacy to anyone in the double pull-down bed using this as a sleeping area. Visually this lower ceiling-ed area then reflects a normal bedroom except that one wall is curtained. This "bedroom" even has its own open-able window. All the light can be cut out, What we can't offer here is sound-proofing. The image below here demonstrates how this area can be effortlessly transformed into a bedroom. Adjacent is a lovely bathroom with a choice of bath or shower.

At the front of the double-height living space, filled with light from both the original windows in the end gable and the new glazed sliding doors that open onto the small flagstoned courtyard, is the multi-fuel stove which burns coal and logs. And what could be nicer than relaxing in one of the two large leather settees, or another comfy seat, in front of a real living fire? Or dining in splendour seated around the glass dining-table which seats 6, flickering flames in the hearth close by, soft music from the CD player in the background? The effect is of gracious, spacious living. If there are more than 12 of you, or you have visitors, the kitchen table can be brought through to seat a further 6 guests.

Kitchen>>
The equally voluminous and airy kitchen downstairs has lots of interesting features. Granite worktops, oak units and, thanks to the underfloor heating throughout the downstairs, warm-to-the-feet limestone flags. Overlooking you from a floored ledge up above is Mr. Fox eyeing up his cockerel lunch (a separate sculpture), his jaunty stance artistically captured in metal! Also high up are the old beams and centuries old pulley wheels. The kitchen is exceptionally well equipped, sharing all the features common to all our properties as described on our FAQ Page, additionally offering a wall-mounted third TV. And for those impromptu alfresco meals the kitchen table and chairs in the corner are light enough to carry outside through the glazed patio doors and onto the cobbled patio area which belongs exclusively to Orlege.

Separate from the kitchen is a utility room with sink, washing machine and tumble-drier. And a supply of wellie boots for exploring the farm.

Outside>>
Guests have the choice of relaxing either in their private patio area or in the shade of the magnificent maple tree and woodland area just feet away from the gable end of the living area. With its double-height windows optimising the views to the fields of Wester and Easter Orlege beyond, you'll feel part of the rural idyll just 30 minutes out from Edinburgh. True Scottish sophistication in the countryside.

Review from a visiting journalist - "One of the most surprising things about turning up here is that Orlege doesn't feel like holiday accommodation at all but rather a highly characterful and contemporary home. The modernity of this conversion is apparent throughout -- from the tension wire detailing to the mezzanine's balustrade and ash wood staircase, to the contemporary halogen lighting suspended on tension wires along the vaulted space. However the building's original character remains: there's an earthiness almost, in the use of stone and wood, albeit one played against crisp white walls and streamlined leather furniture".

It's a lovely description of this stunning conversion of what used to be a collection of outbuildings tagged onto the main eighteenth century farmhouse.

A couple of minutes walk from Orlege, children and adults can enjoy our latest 2015 investment, which judging from the whoops of delight, confirm it was well worth the extra expense of installing really robust play equipment in the woods close by, accessible to the guests from all 3 of our smaller cottages. The woodland setting is perfect for the garden play fort with views out through the trees into the fields beyond. With a large family basket swing, sling and toddler swings, a trapeze bar and rings, a see-saw, sandpit and balancing logs and a picnic bench for the adult supervisors when not joining in, what better way to while away a bit of time and enjoy a bit of nature at the same time?

>Electricity as used (meter readings charged at cost, according to usage).WHY? Some owners prefer to offer an "all-in" rental but into that rental they have built in costs for those guests who use a lot of fuel and electricity. We prefer that guests who are economic or "green" in their usage should benefit, pay less and not subsidise more profligate users! For those holidaying with their dog(s), we would be immensely grateful if you could observe the: Crosswoodhill Dog House Rules for Orlege End Cottage.

If you bring your pets on holiday with you, we assume it is because they are part of the family and you accept that it may restrict how and where you spend your time. Some pets, totally happy to be left on their own back at their real home, have surprised their owners by becoming really quite distressed about being left in a strange house. The dogs then, in turn, distress those within earshot at Crosswoodhill.

Inside>>>

1. Our Terms of Let state that dogs are not to be left alone at any time in the accommodation. Occasionally, and always following discussion, we may relax this rule allowing guests to leave them unattended “at home” for half a day ( a maximum of 4 hours ideally ) provided they are shut in the porch at the Steading, the downstairs bathroom in Orlege or the ground floor in the Wing, with their needs remembered ( comfort, food, drink, temperature.) Unless your dog has been left within an individual “crate” that they are used to and we have inspected, a £100 cash deposit, payable before the event, will be required if any pets are to be left alone, by agreement, at any time. This £100 will be returned at the end of the stay if no damage has been caused to the property. However if it is evident that your dog has become distressed about being left at home, barks a lot or our property appears to be “at risk”, please accept that this privilege will be withdrawn and the dog owner/guest will be responsible for paying in full for any damage sustained to the property. If you have a mobile phone, leaving us the number for emergency situations would be helpful ( and please keep it switched on ). And please tell us the name of your pet(s).
2. Please keep your pets off the furniture and remove any animal hairs from the rugs, floorboards, etc. before you leave. (The cylindrical vacuum cleaner, with attachments for upholstery, is useful for this.)
3. Please do not allow any dogs upstairs, on the beds or chairs. Please bring your own dog-beds/baskets.
4. Please keep your dog under strict control at all times and accept any liability for any damage caused. Please be aware that if you leave your dog unattended in the house and it chews and swallows a foreign body, this could be fatal. For this reason, if you have trained your dogs to accept a crate as a safe den, it would be ideal to bring a crate with you.

Outside>>>

1. Because of the sheep, please no exercising in the fields, on or off the lead, unless we have signposted you, after arrival, to any empty-of-stock adjacent fields ( but please don’t rely on this) There is a very good picnic area one mile down the road on the A70 on the left-hand side, just beyond the junction with the B7008 to West Calder. This offers dogs plenty of scope to scamper some distance off a lead.
2. Could you please use a poop scoop (supplied) in the garden and make sure that all offerings are picked up and disposed of into the black wheely bin. It is exceedingly unpleasant for guests following you to inherit a garden or woodland area contaminated with dog faeces.
3. Please oversee your dog’s voiding sessions and encourage your dog to urinate outside the garden in the woods at the back of the Wing, or in the wooded area to the front of Orlege or outside the gates of Steading Cottage. This is because, unfortunately, the ammonia in the urine burns the lawn, leaving unsightly patches which take weeks to disappear.
4. Please be aware of the following: Steading Cottage garden is enclosed, but athletic dogs could jump the surrounding stone walls and escape onto the road if not supervised. With Orlege, the patio area is not enclosed and an unsupervised dog could wander down the lane onto the road. The Wing of Crosswoodhill guests should be aware of woods at the back of their garden, where an adventurous unsupervised dog could eventually find its way onto the road or fall in a stream. Also be aware that our tenants of 430+ years in the middle section of Crosswoodhill farmhouse (which houses the Wing and Orlege) kennel their 2 dogs outside to the rear of the lovely garden that Wing guests pass through. But their dogs never roam unsupervised in the gardens. And up at Craigengar an athletic dog could jump the fences into the fields and worry our livestock.
5. We do provide old dog towels and some dog bowls for you use. Please bring your own leads.
